![]() Damage is one of the least efficient uses of a spell-slot and I'd say it's mostly Full Casters that have the slots to spend on such things regularly, but a damaging spell or two is good to have on hand.įlaming Sphere is a bit of an exception to this because it is concentration and gives something for the Fighter to do with their bonus action without sacrificing a shield. I tend to find it really strong for third-casters.ĭepending on spell-slots for damage is a bit prone to be disappointing for third-casters (and half-casters to an extent). ![]() I tend to call such a thing a "Jedi" build, where you use magic to buff up things like movement rather than dealing direct damage. Using things like Black Tentacles (Oblivion cleric) to slow up another flank.Īs to when? I was having fun zooming around the battlemaps pretty much from the point I took the archetype onward, so level 3. Otherwise, I worked to prevent the enemy from maintaining formation and forced them to scatter and not support each other. Or if there were critters doing a lot of flybys and I wanted the hang out in a Spirit Guardian or Blade-Barrier shell so they'd take damage going in and out. I mostly clustered the team if there were targets I wanted to focus fire down or if it was something like the vampire fight and I wanted everybody hanging out in the daylight sphere. or if I saw a bunch of people clustered around the magebane and figured it was ripe for a Shatter+WarCry (careful on that though, barbarians have lots of HP, but it does whittle over time if not cautious.) I mostly treated damage spells as a thing to do when I couldn't apply mace to face and a way to save on needing to use ammunition (also her Dex was 12 and her Int was 18, so just better in general). by and large, except for the cleric, very mobile party). note the Magebane had the cloak of arachnida, so she was pretty mobile as well. On some fights it let me split the enemy up into two fronts reliably and keep the rogue and cleric safe in the middle.Īlso, it let me send my magebane to hunt casters and leave the spellsword to hold the line.īetween Spider Climb and Expeditious, I sometimes had her working with the rogue to do objectives around the map because she was just that fast (and with Spider Climb active, decently able to get places. ![]() ![]() Sharing tanking with the Magebane Barbarian. (I actually think I should have kept it)īetween plate mail, cloak of displacement, +2 shield, and the mace of smashing (2d6 one-handed weapon) I was floating between damage dealing and tanking with her. While I had Magic Missile, I would occasionally use that for flyers or if I couldn't get in reach of a target even with Expeditious, but decided to leave that to cantrips eventually. Even then, if I decided I wanted to draw the opponents to my group rather than split up and go out to them, I wouldn't even need that. In general, I only "needed" one slot per combat to trigger Expeditious Retreat. How close to the end of the game did your character start to be nice to use ? Hmmm that's really interesting, did you have enough spell slots ? What was your char's role ?ĭo you think a dex medium armor wearing spellblade could be a decent Damage dealer ? or have any utility in the group ? Ray of Frost, Fire Bolt, Shine, Expeditious Retreat, Longstrider, Jump, Misty Step, Shatter, Flaming Sphere, Spider ClimbĪt one point I had Magic Missile and subbed in Longstrider, but I think with Expeditious and everything else, I'd have been better to stick with Magic Missile there. My Spellblade's spell list btw was something like this at 12: I had to use bows and worry about ammo for my sneak attack (only mild inconvenience admittedly, and Medusa Bow was nice). I do suggest not getting Shadow Dagger as your only attack cantrip though, it's a save-throw cantrip so it doesn't work with sneak attack. and Shatter + Magebane Barbarian is hilarious) and a Shadowcaster Rogue with Shield and Blur is great at survival and also add Identify for magic item IDing. (expeditious retreat on a fighter is frightening. Originally posted by thrythlind:I just finished with a Spellsword doing lots of movement self-buffs and one or two attack spells.
